Top 5 Affordable Tablets With Voice Calling Feature

$

Tablets are not a niche segment anymore. What once started out as a second screen is now a device that is a must-buy for most users. This is mostly due to the added functionality a tablet comes with, in that it can double as a communication device on the go. Most tablets now come with a SIM card slot that allows users to add a SIM and access Internet using cellular networks.

While tablets are a dime a dozen, here are best 5 3G-enabled tablets that stand out from the rest:

Top 5 Cheap Affordable Tablets With Voice Calling Feature

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 T211

Samsung has decided to go with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” policy with the Galaxy Tab 3. The tablet features a similar design and has hardware that has not changed much from the Tab 2. The Tab 3 T211 comes with a 7-inch screen, and does come with narrower bezels than its earlier offering.  In terms of hardware, the tablet does quite well with a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB ROM with a micro-SD slot that can extend memory to 32 GB , a 3MP camera at the back and a 1.3 MP shooter at the front along with a 4,000 mAh battery.

The T211 is a 3G tablet, and users can install a SIM card to access Internet on the go. If you are near a Wi-Fi network, the Tab 3 211 allows you to connect to 2.4 GHz as well as 5 GHz wireless networks, which is an added advantage. Although there is nothing that is groundbreaking on the device, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 price in India is just Rs. 15,392, which means that it will sell very well. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is a little outdated, but there is nothing that you’re missing out on.

ASUS Fonepad

Asus is a relative newcomer to the tablet segment, but has managed to establish a foothold quite well. The Fonepad is a great tablet, and one of the best that is available in this segment. The 7-inch offering comes with a 720p HD screen, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB ROM, micro-SD card slot, a 3.15 MP camera at the back and a 1.2 MP camera at the front along with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The tablet also has a 4,270 mAh battery, and the single SIM card slot is of the GSM variety.

One of the distinguishing features on the tablet is the inclusion of a 1.2 GHz Intel Atom Z2420 processor, which makes it very fast. Intel is set to announce its next-generation Bay Trail processors next year, but for now the current Atom series is fast enough to suit users’ needs, and is available for just Rs. 13,100.

Lenovo IdeaTab A3000

Lenovo is enjoying a great year that has seen it overtake traditional notebook vendors like Dell. Its move to go global is also working out very well for the brand, as its mobile and tablet offerings are well-received by users in India and elsewhere. The IdeaTab A3000 is the third tablet launched in India, and comes with great features. The tablet is one of a few that comes with dual-SIM functionality (GSM + GSM), and that means that you can use two different mobile networks while on the go.

Other hardware features include a 7-inch screen (1024 x 600 pixels), 1 GB RAM, 16 GB ROM, 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and a 5 MP camera at the back along with a measly 0.3 MP shooter at the front. It does have Wi-Fi connectivity, internal codecs for the latest audio and video file formats, and a 3,500 mAh battery that is claimed to last for 8 hours of continuous internet browsing. The IdeaTab A300 is available for Rs. 12,975 in India.

Micromax Canvas Tab P650

Micromax has released a lot of tablets under the FunBook moniker, but it looks like the largest Indian manufacturer is looking to consolidate offerings under a single line. The Canvas Tab is the first such tablet, and comes with hardware that is decent. It may not be the fastest or the best tablet on this list, but Micromax is counting on its loyal user base and strong advertising efforts to push sales of this tablet further. The tablet is available in India for Rs. 13,000.

The Micromax Canvas Tab p650 comes with an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB ROM of which 12 GB is available to the user, 5 MP camera at the back with a 2 MP camera at the front and runs on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. The 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor makes sure that the tablet can handle any intensive tasks you throw at it. Also available is Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity.

XOLO QC800

Xolo is also getting into the tablet market, and the QC800 is a testament to how far the Indian manufacturer has come in a year. The tablet features identical hardware to the Micromax Tab, but comes with a Qualcomm 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 8225Q CPU than the MediaTek one used in Micromax’s offering. The front camera is also very low and is an area Xolo could’ve worked at. That being said, the tablet is on offer for just Rs. 11,500 which is less than what other tablets in this segment cost.

How To Extend Battery Life in Nexus 5

$

0

Google Nexus 5 Proved that manufacturers can make a device powerful enough with some high-end specifications at half the price of what they demand for flagship smartphone. But, Nexus 5 disappoints with its battery life. As a matter of fact, the 2300 mAh battery on Nexus 5 is average that doesn’t even last for a day under heavy usage. Though Google and LG managed to offer an excellent combination of hardware and software on Nexus 5, the battery on the device doesn’t impress at all. Here are a few tips and tricks by which you can use to stretch a couple of extra hours or so with the same battery.

1. Display : Lower the brightness

To be frank. Google and LG have done a decent job keeping the display of Nexus 5 bright, the Full HD screen is bright and clear and has good daylight visibility, but the battery life suffers. The full HD display can easily drain the battery of Nexus 5.

Lower the brightness and switch off the auto brightness in nexus 5. This will add a couple of extra hours of usage time of your device.

2.  Turn off  GPS, NFC  , WiFi and Bluetooth when not needed

GPS and Bluetooth drain a lot of battery when on,  same is the case with WiFi, switch off these radios when you don’t need them. In addition disable the WiFi scanning on the device from device WiFi settings and un-check ‘Scanning always available’. Un-check the NFC option if you don’t want to use it.

3. Choose the right Mobile network

Nexus 5 is LTE capable, but if you don’t have LTE support, choose 3G or 2G mobile network from the “Settings->More->Mobile Network Settings->Network Mode” .

4. Disable Google Now or at-least ‘Ok Google’ detection

Saying ‘Ok Google’ is pretty handy feature to search using voice, but it drains a lot of battery , if you wish, you can disable this by heading to Google Now-> settings-> Voice and disable Hotword detection. If you don’t use Google Now, you can disable it too.

5. Say NO to Live Wallpapers

Never use a live wallpaper because they drain a lot of battery while running in background.

6.  Use battery manager apps

There are many apps available on Google Play that manages apps and save battery on smartphone. One such app Battery Guru is free on Google Play and manages the app refresh pattern and WiFi automatically once set.

6.  Disable Auto Synchronization in accounts

You can disable automatic synchronization of accounts that you don’t use frequently. You can disable automatic synchronization of specific apps from their settings option.

Dalvik vs ART: Android’s Future Runtime Introduced in Kitkat

$

In Android 4.4 Kitkat, Google introduced a run-time environment ART, though ART is experimental, It hints that Google might completely replace its current run-time Dalvik. This option is available in developer options of Android in Kitkat. There are many pros and cons of ART run-time, and it is still in working, but in future versions of Android, this might replace Dalvik run-time completely.

Let’s see what is ART, and how it is different from Dalvik and how does ART affects Android experience.

What is ART and Dalvik

dalvik vs art

Dalvik and ART are virtual machines. Virtual machines emulates the computer architecture or functions of real computer hardware. It means that virtual machines allow an application to run on any hardware platform acting as interface between  them.

Dalvik is based on JIT (Just in Time) compilation. JIT (hence Dalvik Virtual machine) compiles a small part of code and require less memory. The code compiles every time you run an app and hence adds to the lag while the app starts.

ART is based on AOT (Ahead of Time) compilation. In ART, the code compiles during installation to system dependent language and hence it doesn’t needs to get compiled again and again when user opens an app.

Why is Google thinking about ART as future Runtime?

There are many reasons why Google is working on ART :

1. Since the code is precompiled once during installation, It doesn’t need to be recompiled again while opening an app, hence lag is reduced while opening of an app.

2. Speed increase while using multiple apps and multitasking.

3. Saves CPU cycles and hence saves battery because CPU doesn’t need to recompile an app again and again,

4. Increase speed in RAM and storage usage.

Cons of ART:

1. The app installation takes more time.

2. The app takes much more space than using Dalvik runtime.

3. Since ART is currently an experiment, most of the apps crash or don’t work with ART.

4. CPU integer operations are better on Dalvik.

Why Google didn’t introduce it before?

When Google unveiled the first Android smartphone in 2008, the hardware, storage and memory technology for smartphone was not as advanced as it is today. The storage and memory were less, the smartphone processor was not as powerful as it is today with multi-core processors. On ART an app itself requires much more space than on Dalvik, hence Google dropped the idea of ART.

What is the future of ART?

Google has introduced the option to switch on ART with Android Kitkat, the project is now experimental but the advantages of ART clearly indicates that future Android versions will come with ART runtime once it becomes stable and developers start supporting it.

Top 5 Misconceptions About Recovery of Deleted Files

$
0
0

Many of us have faced the situation when we accidentally deleted a file or even an entire folder and then tore our hair out, and looked for a way of fixing it. The solution does exist which is recovery of deleted items with the help of various software(s) available online. However, let’s have a look at the common myths about recovery of deleted files.

Top 5 Misconceptions About Recovery of Deleted Files

1. All file systems are the same

It is not so, because each file system stores and deletes the data in a different way. That’s why some file systems are more recoverable while with the others, in the best case, you just cannot say in advance what the recovery brings, and in the worst case, – nothing is recovered. The example of the most recoverable file systems is NTFS available on Windows PCs and on the other hand the award for most unrecoverable file systems goes to HFS on MacOS.

2. SSD and rotational hard drives delete data in the same way

Many of us think that nothing depends on the device storing data. However, it is not true. Modern solid state drives (SSD) have a built-in capability (so called TRIM command) to erase blocks holding the deleted data to increase write performance. For a user, deleted data turns into a complete loss within a few minutes after deletion.

Rotational hard drives do not do that allowing us to recover data even some time after deletion.

3. Data recovery labs use some magic software to recover deleted files

People think that data recovery labs are equipped with special un-delete software for more thorough data recovery. I’m afraid to disappoint you but as far as the software goes, everyone uses the same data recovery software as you may download, say at any software archive. The only difference is that they have some experience with these tools, and therefore the knowledge to identify which software is better suited for a particular case.

4. Overwritten files are still recoverable

Although this myth is often discussed,  FBI, criminologists, or the police still can recover overwritten data. Of course not. On rotational hard drives, where the data is stored through magnetization (magnetized means 1, non-magnetized means 0), in theory a new write does not always “kill” the earlier data, but the researches show that there is no practical value in this.

On a SSD, where storage of data takes place through voltage in the memory cells there is no memory about the previous state at all, meaning that being overwritten once, the data cannot be recovered.

5. Deleted data always goes to the Recycle Bin first

There is a perception that all the deleted data first goes to the Recycle Bin and stays there for a while. Actually, this is not always true. For example if the size of deleted file is more than the maximum size of Recycle Bin, It is deleted bypassing the Recycle Bin. Also, It is important to know that when you delete data from the removable devices (memory card, thumb drive, and so on), It does not get to the Recycle Bin at all.

If you still have any doubts about recovering of deleted files feel free to ask in comments below the post.
